Cụ thể, Chính phủ Úc đã cam kết hỗ trợ 80 triệu AUD (55 triệu USD) cho một sáng kiến toàn cầu nhằm đảm bảo khả năng tiếp cận công bằng, an toàn và hiệu quả với vaccine phòng COVID-19 của các nước nghèo trên thế giới.
Viện Burnet và tổ chức Pacific Friends of Global Health đã hoan nghênh những cam kết tài trợ đối với cơ chế COVAX được phát triển để cung cấp khả năng tiếp cận nhanh chóng, công bằng, bình đẳng, an toàn và hiệu quả đối với vaccine COVID-19 sau khi chúng được phê duyệt và đưa vào sử dụng.
COVAX do Liên minh Vaccine Quốc tế GAVI, Liên minh các sáng kiến chống dịch bệnh (CEPI) và Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới (WHO) điều phối. Theo sáng kiến này, vaccine sẽ được phân phối công bằng giữa các nước có thu nhập cao hơn, có khả năng tự chi trả và các nước đang phát triển không đủ khả năng chi trả cho vaccine. Cho đến nay, 172 quốc gia đã bày tỏ mong muốn tham gia vào sáng kiến này.
Cam kết này sẽ đảm bảo rằng, chi phí không phải là rào cản trong việc tiếp cận vaccine COVID-19 đối với các nước nghèo, bao gồm một số nước láng giềng trong khu vực của Úc. Một số quốc gia đã cam kết với COVAX AMC, cơ chế tài chính được thiết lập để đảm bảo rằng, các công ty dược phẩm lớn cung cấp vaccine COVID-19 với mức giá phải chăng cho những quốc gia đang phát triển.
Thông qua việc tài trợ cho COVAX AMC, Úc sẽ giúp đảm bảo vaccine ngừa COVID-19 cho các quốc đảo Thái Bình Dương và những nước Đông Nam Á, trong đó có Việt Nam, cung cấp đủ số liều cho 20% dân số những quốc gia trong giai đoạn đầu tiên, đặc biệt là nhân viên y tế và các nhóm đối tượng dễ bị tổn thương như người cao tuổi.
Cho đến nay, COVAX AMC đã nhận được hơn 600 triệu USD tiền tài trợ và đặt mục tiêu huy động được 2 tỷ USD vào cuối năm 2020.
